The Eclipse Hauntings

The Eclipse Hauntings

By Vincent Valentean

The Sexton’s musings (spoilers are likely):

I’m so excited to have the team back together again; however, we all know that this means. The bad guy/guys can use them as leverage against Merlyn. Of course this is also one of his biggest fears as well. This time the job is for a former colleague of Kate’s. A fellow police academy chum who, going outside his command purview, seeks unconventional help for the weirdness going on in his jurisdiction. And let me tell you Ghoulies…it’s some freaky shit! It neither makes sense in the “rational” world nor in the world of the paranormal. I’m not familiar with the drug world (which is not really part of the “rational” world) but I’d imagine even in that world this would be some freaky shit! And it is this world, the world of drugs, that the team is venturing into. One that leaves its victims levitating and surrounded in a mist of red.

Speaking of red mists…that’s what I would like to turn Hector Delgado into, with a wood chipper. I can’t stand people like him. They think they are untouchable. NO ONE IS UNTOUCHABLE, dumb shit! We obviously know that there is some form of magic involved here, and that is so. Passed down from his abuela or grandmother, to him. Unfortunately, I don’t think she knew that her grandson was “the wrong hands” to give the knowledge to. His abuela was a healer, he is a destroyer. He has perverted her teachings into something corrupt and evil. Poor woman us probably turning over in her grave. Chapter 16 is where the anger rose up and red was seen…this pathetic man needs to be removed…completely. Apparently there is some fruit, nut or flake that is on the West Coast that even Hector does not want to anger or disappoint. However it seems Hector believes that someday he will have the upper hand over this person so maybe they should be informed. I can’t suffer these kinds of people to live. There is no place for them, pathetic bullies who think their shit doesn’t smell. Obviously a good character to get me all hot and bothered. I just hope his kidneys become earrings and he’s force fed his own intestines.

Now…the last quarter of the book, of course, picks up exponentially (not that the rest of it is slow paced). Hector seems to have this delusion that he is respected for his “power.” Unfortunately, because he is a moron, he does not realize that it’s not respect but fear for their own skin. It has nothing to do with respect. He’s so stupid he can’t tell the difference. But I’ll tell you something that I know about people who fear him…they would like nothing more than to see his insides on the outside. Fear does not breed loyalty and respect. It breeds compliance. They are not the same thing.

What is one thing that most people know about meth and meth labs? They blow up very easily. And what is one thing that people say about ones Abuela (Yiayia, Nonna, Nanna, Grandma, etc…)? Watch out for that wooden spoon. Very satisfying indeed!

Closing thoughts:

As always, a well written book and a great story with characters that that you love to love and love to hate. Anyone who has read any of the previous Merlyn books can’t help but love him. In this one I will say that his constant questioning of his abilities and seeing failure in everything grew a bit tiresome. This said a bit of humble pie never hurt anyone. All he had to do was use his brain and fall back on what he does best. Physical confrontation was not the answer because it was not a winnable battle but when approached in a different way victory was, almost, a sure thing. Spoon shaped bruises everywhere!

I have to make mention of the last part of the epilogue and how much I want to cave in his face. I knew all of this had politician stank all over it. Fucking corrupt pieces of human garbage. They are all sociopaths (and I’m not talking about the book here). Something to chew on my little Ghoulies!

Happy Devouring!
