The Sleep Experiment (Book 2 of World’s Scariest Legends)

The Sleep Experiment

By Jeremy Bates

The Sexton’s musings (spoilers are likely):

This story is crazy! The beginning starts out completely normal and as it moves toward the end it’s like a bomb goes off and things take a crazy, bloody turn for the worst. I mean it’s obvious that things are going to turn out bad, especially for the test subjects, but I was not expecting some of it.

The female characters, Penny, Brandi and Brooke were rather pathetic. Each in their own unique way but pathetic none the less. I understand that they were part of the story to mostly develop the main character and how he interacts within his relationships with the opposite sex but they just did not work for me. I can appreciate their utilization in character development but that’s as far as my appreciation goes.

Now the professor is fascinating. While he sounds like a handsome individual who carries himself crisp and clean it’s not his outward appearance that fascinates me. It’s his mind and his theory about the truth of the human mind. This story delves into some crazy stuff. Crazy stuff that when you think about it does not seem all that crazy after all. He actually proves where the evil in man originates. What that means for the human consciousness and what would happen if that evil were to be let out. It absolutely blew my mind! When I thought about it further (which is what I love about Bates’s books, they make you consider, to think) I decided that I could actually jump on the train. We know so little about the human mind so who knows. The possibilities are exponential! This particular one is, by far, one that I am not quick to discount.

The way in which the test subjects are effected is not for the weak of heart or stomach. I have to admit I was not expecting Sharron to end her life the way that she did. And as far as Chad is concerned…damn…just damn! The end chapters hold some pretty disturbing scenes. It’s very intense there for a bit! I have to say the climax of this one is exactly that! It comes in with a punch in the face and just keeps going for a decent clip. It’s great!

Closing thoughts:

Just as the previous books this is based on a true legend. The Russian Sleep Experiment is a creepypasta and associated with this creepypasta is one of the most disturbing, nightmare inducing images ever! Where Bates went with this was fantastic!

While some of this book may not be the most comfortable for some readers it’s worth it! It’s so fascinating and thought provoking. While some might see all of this in a negative, unethical light you have to consider what is really being talked about here. What if the end of times starts, not in some biblical hell but within man itself. The thought just absolutely gets my brain rolling and I love that! I love when books stimulate that within my mind. Considering the implications of what this would mean for the world. It’s definitely worth chewing on my little Ghoulies!

Happy Devouring!
