Haunted: Mother Death
Haunted: Mother Death
By Lee Mountford
The Sexton’s musings (spoilers are likely):
This one starts right where the last one ends. In fact, it’s only a few days later. This one follows David and his original team of investigators: Ralph, George, and Ann (eye roll). She is an attention whore of the worst kind. She uses lies to gain attention and her woe-is-me attitude here is going to get on my last nerve I suspect. Considering what has happened to Ralph (stabbed), David (almost dying twice), Father Luca (also almost dying twice), and Sarah (the list is too long) she needs to fuck off. Interestingly enough she gets what’s coming to her (in my humble opinion). Though her fate is not completely known at the end. The one thing I think is definite though is we will no longer have to endure her BS.
I’m pretty sure George is also going to be out. I can’t blame him for that. Even at the beginning he didn’t seem 100% committed. Considering what happens during this installment I would say he is going to step away. Hell even David was thinking about it but I don’t in a million years think that he could just walk away. There is definitely part of him that wants to, I think that’s normal in the circumstance but I don’t see it happening. Especially not with four books left in the series. Plus he learns during the climax that Sarah and Luca are in trouble. The church sent them to the U.S. on another investigation splitting them and David’s team. It’s ironic that the “safe” investigation that the church sent the team on turned out to a disaster proves one thing…they have no fucking clue what they are doing.
Last but not least we have Ralph who has no intension of taking a seat. We get to spend a little more time with him in this book. I really like him. I think he is a great secondary character. Plus what’s not to like about the token big burley teddy bear that we see so often in horror. Nicest guy you will meet until you hurt someone he cares about. Plus he’s big enough to pick up a grown man so not a bad guy to have on your side when trouble comes calling, including the paranormal side. I really hope we keep seeing him.
Now lets talk about the family that they go to help. At first the wife pissed me off. I thought she was a real bitch but then I find out why she is acting the way that she is (BIG SPOILER COMING UP). Her husband is faking the haunting to try and make a buck off of it. Once this fact is brought to light Dale is firmly placed on my shit list. I did have a moment of weakness when he got what he wished for and became a bit more humble but by the end I really wish his kid had become an orphan. He continually blames the team for what happens and the fact is he is the reason it is all happening. Even if the Ouija session did allow the entities into the house, they were there doing that at Dale’s insistence. So his scheme is the reason everything occurred. The frustrating thing is the David agrees with him that they caused it and that’s just not the case. If the dude was not such a fucking moron and try to fuck with this stuff for money, his family would have been fine. So ultimately he is responsible for the horrible things that end up happening to everyone involved. So seriously…fuck that guy. I hope the cops pin Trish’s death on him and lock him the fuck up. I can dream can’t I?
Closing thoughts:
A nice little addition to the series. There are some unanswered questions that I have such as why did the demon want to possess David? What is the motivation? Infiltration? But for what end? It’s obvious that what happens is related to the big picture but how? What is the plan for Sarah? What role does David play in it? I do love that Chloe is back and helping the team. Honestly I would expect nothing less from her. She is tenacious when it comes to protecting her Sarah. That tenacity supersedes even death. And good thing too because David would have been walking around with yellow eyes and ugly at the helm. The weak moment that he has is unfortunate but hopefully the experience makes him stronger. Makes him realize how important he is in the survival of all that we hold precious. Essentially our reality.
Time to move on to the next chapter in this series. I have a feeling we are going to be travelling to the U.S. to see what is going on with Sarah and Luca. It’s going to be interesting to see how David actually gets there, if he does get there. We shall see little Ghoulies!
